Isn't if "better" to play the queen on the first diamond, forcing West to win the first diamond, not the second?
If you play the queen you're costing yourself a diamond trick when west has Ax
is there any danger to ruffing a c at trick 2 (stripping the suit) and playing a Dia towards the K at trick 3? Alternatively, a trump to dummy and another back to hand at tricks 3 and 4 and then a Dia towards the K?
I would never take an unneccessary ruff in the long hand. Its a really bad habit. I only take ruffs in the long hand when the opponents force me to, or if I really need an entry. There is no reason not to start by trying to draw trumps. Its unlikely but possible the opponents will get a diamond ruff (imagine west has no diamonds and 3 hearts),
Is there a way to cater for West having 4 diamonds (3046) ?
No not really. They would just get a diamond ruff if you did it too early and if you draw trumps quickly then you would fail because you get tapped out. If you try you give up on the possibility that west has 4-0-2-7 with Ax of diamonds.
