Board 5 question for north hand regarding bid of spade, If west did not bid ♥ for n to bid 1♠ does he promise 5
1♠ if west had passed is usually 5, but sometimes 4 if they suit is good or your are stuck.
B5. To double and show the 4th suit and "tolerance for partner's suit", later described as "something for partner" what is the minimum "something?" Here North had 3 small. Is 2 small enough? Honor and small? Thanks.
Tolerance in this context means a doubleton at least, preferably honor doubleton although it's not required.
Hi Gavin, on board 8, you mention something called Bayes or modified Bayes (may not be the right spelling) - is that something that comes up in one of your lessons - I’ve not heard of that.
It's Baze, named after great player Grant Baze. I believe it's in Gavin's lesson on bidding after Stayman. It occurs when you bid stayman and partner bids a major, how you make various slam tries in support of that major.
Hi Gavin - 2 questions on board 6. Firstly I’m a little confused about when a jump to 2S in the free bid situation over 1D would show 5. In the forced bid situation over pass I think I’m clear that 2S shows 8-11 pts and 4+. Could you elaborate on how this changes in the free bid situation. Secondly, I think it was I who was suggesting E passes over 2C in the live chat - I was thinking of a trap pass here hoping partner doubles again and going for blood against 2C. East’s clubs are maybe not quite good enough for this and the vulnerability is wrong here but is the idea of trying to penalise them in 2C completely crazy ?
East can jump with 4 spades, they just need a little more strength and hopefully a decent suit. I don't understand your second question since no one is in 2♣.
Gavin on board 2, I like to play 3 ranges of club support so 1C-2C is inverted, inv+, 1C-3C is weak and 1C-2D criss-cross in the minors shows a hand like the north hand - is such a treatment at all popular? Just something I made up. 1D-3C would show the same range with diamond support similarly.
I have seen systems like that plenty of times before, they are not uncommon. It seems fine, if you like it then keep it. Knowing your system is the most important part.
