Hi Gavin #7 if opps stop in 2H rather than 2S...and we make a reopening/balancing double, can our Partner still use scrambling 2NT? (1NT) P (2d) P, (2H) P (P) X Is this hand a variation on scrambling 2NT with 4/4? Sort of like saying "I want to bid but I don't know what to bid?"
Yes absolutely. So often these takeout doubles are 4/3 or even 5/3 in the minors. We need 2N as a way to get partner to bid their longer minor. Plus we have no other use for 2NT. We never want to play in 2NT!
Question: I absolutely love your lessons!!! Game changer for me. Thank you!! I learned this week from you to not bid Stayman with 4333 distribution and today my partner opened 1 NT with: KJX AKT87 KXX XX I held: Axx 9653 QXX KTX So I did the ask bid of 2S and we missed our heart fit. He told me I was wrong. I am so confused. Please help me understand what I should have bid. The field did not open 1NT and found 3H. We ended up in 2NT but beat others in 4 H. Thanks!!
Hi Jane, I would have used 1N-2♠ just like you did. I think its the right way to bid this hand. Even on this hand, it didnt have to be wrong to play in 3NT. Every time they under lead their queen of spades you will get a top. Even with the queen of spades onside you still might do well to play in 3NT. Its really important not to judge an action based on the outcome of the actual hand. There are so many benefits to not bidding stayman. 1) You make it harder for them to find the right opening lead. 2) You make it harder for them to defend the hand whenever partner does not have a fit in hearts. 3) when you do have a fit there is a really good chance you will take the same number of tricks in 3NT as you do in 4H. When you combine those three things it makes skipping stayman a significant winner over time.
