That I grasp. Thank you. However, suppose I lead K against a suit contract, then as I may have led from KQxx, what does partner do if he holds the Ace? Does he overtake, which may cost us, encourage or give count?
Against suit contracts its virtually always attitude when partner leads an honor, no matter which honor. If partner leads the ace, we give positive attitude about the queen or for a ruff. If partner leads the king, we give positive attitude with the jack or ace. If partner leads the queen, we give positive attitude with the ace, the king or the ten. You don't unblock in suit contracts since partner could easily have just a two honor sequence like KQx where it would blow a trick. Occassionaly you overtake with the ace with ace doubleton when you want a ruff.
Great lesson, thank you. Board 2, if you were playing with Warren, what would you lead? If it was a club, which one to lead and then would Warren give you attitude or count? My partner and I are disagreeing on this point. If I lead KC he gives count after which with the hand above I don’t know who has Ace clubs. When I lead Ace he will give attitude. Could you elaborate on this system please? Should partners first card give attitude unless after seeing dummy it is obvious that we need to change suit. Love all your lessons. They are superb.
We play king asks for unblock if you have an honor, or if you don't to give count. (this is true for any leading system, whatever card asks for count, first asks for unblock, you only give count if you do not have an honor to drop) We can only lead the king if we are comfortable with partner overtaking our King with the ace, or dropping the jack. With KQTxx we don't neccessarily want partner to overtake our honor, so we would typically just lead the queen to ask for attitude and partner would play the 2 to say I don't like it. If we lead the king for count, it would be fine too on this hand, partner would play the 2 to show an odd number (and at the same time deny an honor because they didnt drop it under our king).
Hi Gavin, Thank you for the nice discussion on board 6 about starting with the ♣T versus a low club. I was curious about how often it makes a difference and used Lars Kappel Hansen's Bridge CCAnalyser (https://bridge.esmarkkappel.dk/main/main.html) to investigate the probabilities. If you have no guesses about the distribution of the defenders' clubs, then almost 3/4 of the time, either the ♣K is offside or the split is bad and so you can take only three tricks no matter which way you play it. Starting with the ♣T, you only have an 18% chance of four tricks: only the 3-3 split cases Kxx-xxx. Starting low from dummy and returning to dummy in a side suit lets you pick up 9% more cases: Kx-xxxx and K-xxxxx. I.e., the K falls singleton or doubleton without capturing one of your honors. A couple times recently I have given up a trick on defense because I covered an honor with an honor reflexively. I didn't count out the suit carefully, or I would have realized that I couldn't possibly be promoting an honor in my partner's hand. I would love to have a way to practice making the cover/don't cover decision.
Was I right to GF and then set Hearts by jumping to 4 with this 7-card heart suit, 4 of top 5, but only 10 HCP? I got a 5-1 split and went down one, and my partner is absolutely certain that I should not have gone to game. But boy, what a powerhouse it looked like to me! Great that you have these playable on the site now - I wasn't able to make the live game. Is it possible to import the results from the BBO game? There aren't many results on some of the boards here.
We have the data, but no way to import it into shark bridge. At some point we will try to visualize the results but i wouldnt hold my breath for it to happen before 2025
re. opening weak twos. You mention that you would open a weak two with a jack high suit if 6-4. Would the outside honours influence the decision to open? e.g. with J97654 10 AK63 94 (all vul, dealer) you have two defensive tricks - would you open this 2♠? Many thanks.
I would absolutely open that hand 2♠. I am not spending a ton of energy worrying about "defensive tricks" when my offensive strength is up to par. The idea is that when partner raises us to the correct law level, this hand has a perfectly acceptable trick taking potential. When the opponents start 2♠ pass 3♠, or 2♠ pass 4♠, it causes you to have to make difficult decisions. If you are 100% sure that they are pure (good suit quality, not a lot outside) it makes it way easier to know when to bid one more or just defend. Its important to have a wide range of hands (within reason) in your weak two structure to keep the opponents guessing. Yes it keeps partner guessing as well but its worth it. I even opened 2♥ with a hand at the world championships with even more strength. xxx T9xxxx -- AKxx I hated doing it with two first round controls but still felt like its more important to be a tough opponent. It didnt work out well for me but in surveying the field, the general consensus was that 2♥ was the correct bid.
Thank you for the lesson. I have a question about the bidding on Board 2. Does the Principle of Fast Arrival apply to No Trump rebids? e.g. what is the difference between North's rebid of 2NT vs North jumping directly to 3NT? Thank you.
No fast arrival does not apply for NT. In fact the opposite. I play with my partners that when I am in a game force, jumping to 3NT shows extra values (16-17 points). The idea is responder has no idea what game is best after partners 2♠ rebid. Partner could be 4-5-3-1 and want to show us their diamond fit. Or partner could be 4-6 in the majors. We want to leave room for opener to show a 3rd piece of information. So the only reason to jump is to express some points that would be otherwise difficult to express. (16-17 is a hard range to show in 2/1)
