Board 2 - I love Walsh style but the followups seem to conflict with 2-way NMF when 1C-1D, 1NT? I have seen notes elsewhere indicating 2wNMF on over ALL 1X-1Y, 1NT. Gavin am I correct in assuming you play 2wNMF ON only after 1m-1M, 1NT?
I play it on after 1C-1D-1NT too. Why does it conflict? We can use 2D game forcing, or bid 2 of a major natural and game forcing. We can go either route depending on how we want the auction to develop. I more often would bid my major as responder, so I could continue to show my shape on my 3rd bid. EG 1C-1D 1N-2H 2N-3C now as responder I have shown 5D, 4H, 3C and therefore a singleton spade. This helps avoid bad 3NT contracts when partner is weak in our singleton suit.
B3 After West opened 1♦, it went (1♦)-1♥-(P)-2♥, and East balanced with 3♦ which was passed around to me (North). Should I have sold to it? I did not expect to make 3♥, but thought that it would match point OK at this color. I was doubled by East.
I definitely don't blame you for competing to 3♥ after the auction developed this way. You have a singleton diamond which is a good enough reason to compete non vul.
B1 Great explanation about the playing of 4♥ by North. Count 3 losers in ♠ that need to be ruffed in the short hand, so North can't just start drawing trumps
Hand 12: 1 nt and you suggested 3 D as an interfering bid. My Partner bid 2 clubs over the 1nt opening (we play cappelletti) and I responded with 2 D. The opponents bid us up (I had no points and didn't bid but my P bid us up to 5 d which opps doubled. Anyway- If we are playing cappelletti, how would I interpret that 3 D overcall by my partner of the opponent's 1nt? Would I assume it was natural?
No matter what convention or system you play, the 3 level are just natural preemptive bids like they would be over any opening bid. Your vulnerable 3 level bids need to be iron clad because they have already shown a strong NT so the chances you go -200 are pretty high. Edit just to clarify: if your system doesn’t have a way to bid a suit at the 2 level, such as multi-landy having no way to bid clubs or diamonds then a 3 level bid would show an opening hand and that suit.
When playing Capp I suggest to my partners that with a long minor we just bid 3m directly and not go thru the 2C long suit bid, as you can never stop in 2C for clubs, and almost never does 2C--pass--2D asking which suit get passed out when it's diamonds. But as Gavin says a vul. 3m call is iron clad!
I agree with you Mark that it is far more effective to overcall at the 3 level, than go through a 2♣ "one suiter" and follow it up with 3♣. It is just so difficult to bid after we open 1NT and the opponents overcall at the 3 level.
Right, just kind of pointless to try to crawl to a 2m overcall. In addition, people might think about switching to modified Capp, where you reverse the 2C/2D bids so that 2C is both majors and 2D one major. Then after 2C partner can bid 2D to ask if one major is better or longer. More info for free!
This is the root of Multi-Landy, which is my favorite convention for coming in against 1NT. Playing 2D = one major allows you more flexibility in advancer's choice other than just "2H = tell me which suit you have". Brd 5: How should bidding go if South passed? West opens 1♦. East then passes or bid 1♥? Then what should West bid on 1♥?
I would treat the hand like 19 points (I'd give myself 3 dummy points points for the singleton but not count the jack as a point). I don't think this hand is quite good enough to splinter. Splinters as opener should typically be 18 HCP + the singleton. So I think I'd just jump to 4♥ over 1♥.
That is what my partner did and it went down. I regretted bidding 1♥ on his 1♦ after.
