Yes indeed - that seems like the most important use of an artificial bid here - would that be 5-4 or better in the majors the same as over 1NT opener ?
Yes typically, you might get away with 4-4 sometimes but it really shows at least 9 cards.
Hi Gavin - I’m interested in what bidding structure you prefer for responder after a 1NT overall of partner’s opening bid. In the review of hand 3, you suggest new suits are natural and weak which is one possibility. I’ve noticed from watching vugraph broadcasts that some experts seem to use similar methods to those over a 1NT opening, often similar to multi-landy but with double always penalty. I’m not exactly sure how the usual bids might be modified but I think something like - after 1m (1NT) 2C is both majors as usual, 2D is single 6 card major as usual and 2H and 2S show major minor two suitors perhaps with support for partners minor. Over 1M (1NT) I’m less sure but think a scheme might be 2C is suport for partners major and 5 of the other major, 2D showing 6 of oM 2M showing weak support and 2oM showing a major minor 2 suiter. I also read of a similar treatment to that you suggest over 1M (X) namely having 2M being weak support and 2D being constructive support with 2oM jusy being natural 6 card. Do you use any of these agreements in such auctions ?
My advice is, when we open a minor suit and they overcall 1NT, 2♣ is both majors and the other bids are natural. If we opened a major, all bids are natural. The one important thing is to be able to show both majors when you have them.
