B1. Playing Walsh style 1D 1H. / ? do you ever consider bidding 1S if balanced but have no stoppers in the 4th suit? (in this case clubs) I don't think stoppers are relevant when only 2 suits have been named but I have 2 partners who insist they take that into account and then I am never sure if they are balanced or unbalanced.
I would follow the system and rebid 1NT. If you start wanting to bid suits on balanced hands, why play the system at all? Partner won't be able to make all the correct distributional inferences.
Also, I noticed Lia plays 30/14 Keycard. Do you prefer this over 14/30?
No I don't have a preference. If you set the system to my sytem it should be 1430. There was a bug in the duplicate games during this particular session that prevented Lia from playing my system. This shouldnt be a problem anymore.
B1: On pg 64 of 2way NMF lesson you say a self splinter says to partner - “if you have 14 working points outside of spades, we want to be in slam.” I showed my club control anyway, just in case. But here Responder is stronger and Opener is weaker and doesn't have 14 working points outside of spades. So I'm wondering if I should change my notes.
When your splinter is so low as 3♠, there is room for partner to cooperate with 12-13 working points and drive with 14 working points. Yes you can ammend your notes to say that if there is room partner may cooperate below game with 12 or 13 working points, but should only drive to slam with a great 13-14 working points.
It is not clear to me when you should skip a 4-card spade suit to bid 1NT. In the NMF lesson, On boards 5-7, you explain that when opening 1♣ with 4333 you skip the spade suit on your rebid and rebid 1NT. However, with 4234 you spades you would show spades unless you had a diamond stopper. In this case, 1♦ was the opener, you were 4243 with a control in clubs. What are the rules/considerations when you bypass the 4-card spade suit. You said all experts would bid 1N. Would they also bid 1N without a club stopper and 4243?
The 2 way new minor forcing lesson was from 4 years ago. Over the past 4 years there has been a movement among experts to always bypass the 4 card spade suit to bid 1NT with balanced hands. Regardless of the stopper situation. I am ambivolent to this agreement, but tend to just do what my partner wants. If my partnership has agreed to choose whether to bypass, I would typically look at my stopper in the 4th suit. (but always bypass 4-3-3-3)
On board 8, Lia splintered and we were in 4S. Because of the bidding, I expected the QC to be offside. Instead I played for the clubs to split, and that failed. Is the finesse my only play? Do I try to ruff two diamonds. Whats the plan? Thanks!
The key to board 8 is to ruff two clubs in dummy (or even 3 if they don't play trump and you get your second heart cashed. I would win the heart in my hand and play ace king and ruff a club. Then come back to my king of hearts and ruff another club. At this point I would lead a spade off of dummy and if they duck it I would just ruff my last club in dummy. 3 losers 1 heart 1 spade and 1 diamond.
