Hello-I have been replaying the older duplicate game videos and I have a question on Board #6. After 1NT->2C->2D if responder bids 3S doesn't that show a singleton in that suit and concern about playing NT? Is it better to bid 3D (obviously it is because that's what you chose). Is the advantage that you can end up in 5 of that minor? Thanks so much, Karen

1N-2♣ 2♦-3M is smolen (or just natural if you don't play smolen). It shows 5-4 in the majors.

B11. In your lesson on M suit system and constructive raise you suggest that with 5/5 or 6/4 hands Opener would bid game 1M 2M 4M with no extra points. I thought maybe this hand was similar with 5431 shape (singleton) and extra points. But in this hand Opener should only invite?

Huge difference between 10 cards in 2 suits vs 9 cards. There is an extra loser. This hand definitely is not strong enough to blast game. If partner has wasted points in diamonds you will certainly not make a game.

In this afternoon’s pairs game board 6 review, you endorsed the following bidding (silent Opp): 1NT-2C; 2D-3D; 3H-4H … noting North’s 3D is natural, 5cards, and GF. We adopted Weissberger (1NT-2C; 2D-3D = 5/5M-invite), because:: 1. 1NT-2C; 2D-2S = 5/4M-invite. 2. 1NT-2D; 2H-2S = 4/5M-invite (since 1NT-2C; 2D-2H is already assigned to Crawling Stayman). How would YOU bid 5/5M-invite? (if you use 1NT-2D; 2H-2S, then how do you bid 4/5M-invite?) Thanks, Mark

My mom taught me Weissberger when I was young. It is an unplayable convention. You absolutely 100% need 3♦ to be natural and forcing like described in the video. I think the common standard treatment is to play that 1N-2♦-2♥-2♠ is 4-5 or 5-5 invitational. It can be clarified on your next bid. Warren and I play that 3♣ accepts with 3 spades. If this seems like too much memory work, I would just play 2♦-2♥-2♠ is 5-5 and with 4-5 majors inv. just go through stayman and decide between showing weak with 2♥ or forcing with smolen. That is what I would assume people do with no discussion. The important thing is that you are using 3♦ as natural and 4♦ as delayed Texas.

6 days after your answer here, we used this sequence - including the 3♣ rebid (=I do have 3spades) - to find our 5-3 spade fit. Such an elegant solution! Thank you ;-)

At our table, our opponents bid Board 2: 1N - 2H! ; 2S - 4N followed by Blackwood responses and bidding to slam. Is the standard interpretation of 4NT in that auction Quantitative or Key Card for spades? If Blackwood, how does Responder make a quantitative bid? Thank you.

1NT-Jacoby Transfer 2M-4N = quantitative 1NT-Texas 4M-4N = Keycard

how would one decide on this hand to bid Jacoby Transfer or Texas

Gavin WolpertTeacherJul 15, 2022↳ replying to henry stanbery

I discussed the path forward on this hand in the video. You are too strong to use Texas, unless your plan is to just drive to slam. It might be right to drive to slam, but its a gamble.
