On board 8, couldn't east bid 3 clubs instead of 3 diamonds giving partner a choice and possibly a better fit? If so, partner now knows about double fit.
Thats an interesting idea. It certainly works well on this hand if partner reads it and competes to the 4 level. Its not my style in general to give extra information if I don't think itll affect the outcome of the hand. I doubt it'll ever matter to play in clubs vs diamonds so the only reason to do it is to encourage partner to compete to 4. I guess it makes sense that this was a possible outcome. Good suggestion!
Thanks for the recap once again. Question about defending 4D on hand 8. As South, I plan to lead the A spade to see what's going on, then play the singleton club. When I get back in with the A trump, I'll try to get back to partner's hand for a ruff. But if I lead the A spade, will partner discourage even if they have the J? Should I lead the K so they will encourage with a touching honor? I know partner doesn't have much, but all I need is that J spades. Thanks.
I would definitely start by leading my singleton club. For all you know the opponents will have a singleton spade and we will need to underlead to partner's jack to get our ruff. If you are leading a spade honor, you can lead the queen. Partner will know you have AKQ and encourage with the jack. You can also lead the king to get a positive signal with the jack too. Youre right that partner must discourage with the Jack after the ace lead. So the ace lead clearly won't get you what you need.
In board 5, if south had doubled, should west have redoubled? I bid 2 diamonds, thinking that I was showing 5 diamonds and 10+ HCP. I thought that said more about my hand. What do you think?
New suits at the 2 level after a takeout double are non forcing 1♠ (X) 2♦ = diamonds, with fewer than 10 points You must start with redouble. It is different when you are able to bid the suit at the 1 level, those are natural and forcing.
Since the Woolsey DBL is N/A when partner opens and they overcall 1NT, do you like to bid 2M GIB style with a hand like x KQxx Jxxxx xxx? Or do you still want to have the 5 card major? Thanks
Interesting. So in B2, double by north is always penalty because 1N was an overcall and N/S have majority of the points. If North hand was weaker, then playing multi Landy 2C shows both majors not a support for partner's clubs. How would North show clubs? Jump to 3♣?
George, I think its fine to bid 2M with a hand like that. So often responder will be transferring to spades though, so you may be better off just passing and waiting to make a takeout double of 2 spades. That seems like a better approach that will more accurately describe your shape. (4-5 vs 5-4) Liliana, The idea is that when they overcall 1NT we really don't often want to raise our partner's club suit. The NT bidder has stoppers and partner is often short as 3 clubs. It is a trade off, and a very worthwhile one.
