Hi Everybody,
Thanks for playing in the Wolpert Bridge Duplicate Game. I hope you enjoyed the session. This Friday game was geared towards intermediate students, and all was based on lessons in 'Wolperts on Competitive Bidding' series.
One of the goals of these duplicate games is for you to meet each other and maybe find other people to practice with.
Another goal of these duplicate games is to find a way for you to continue learning and practicing what you have learned in my lessons. That was one of the best ways I learned bridge, playing deals and then going over them afterwards. So, if you have any questions about the hands you have played in these games, use the Q&A section below the video to ask your questions.
When asking a question, please reference the deal number. You can also go to BBO, and chose the deal you have played, and from the menu choose 'Export', 'Handviewer link', and copy the link and paste it in the comments together with your question.
Next week, we will have a BBO game on Tuesday and Friday again but this time the post-game review will be a live session on Zoom where you can ask your questions.

B9. What is recommended bidding on this hand after East opens 1d? I see South mainly passed, doubled, or bid 1nt. Best scores were achieved by EW in some level of NT, or NS in 2s. (not that scores dictate our bidding.)
I think its close between 1NT and pass. Double is not an option. I don't love bidding 1NT with a singleton, but this is a pretty strong hand. Being NV against vul I would probably suck it up and overcall 1NT. If I was vul I would probably just pass and stay out of the auction. Very close.
Overall I think this approach is really good; lots of stuff to discuss! Board 1: Is it a good idea to play equal level conversion bids? This would at times necessitate overcaller jumping to show the strong hand with a good suit. Board 4: Should opener consider the AKQxx of diamonds as providing extra value, ie., dummy points in the hand evaluation after the fit is established? Boards 7 and 10: Regarding advancer in both cases, how strong do you need to be to enter the open auction, especially when vulnerable? A partner of mine indicated that a hand like advancer has in board 10 should not enter. She calls this position pre-balancing and one needs a much stronger hand to bid. How do we evaluate in this type of situation? Thanks Gavin.
1) I don't play equal level conversion unless my partner asks me to. I don't know if it's good or bad but I'm perfectly fine not playing it. 4) no question that the AKQxx is better than ♦AQxxx with ♣Kxx. Should opener account for that? Yes if you have a close decision you should definitely upgrade for concentration of values in long suits. Boards 7/10 I certainly don't need a stronger hand to overcall. If I would overcall in the direct seat, I would also overcall in this seat. I also don't consider this a "pre-balancing" spot. I think this is an active auction but if we don't bid now we will not get in again.
Comment: Both sessions were excellant, no complaints, However, learning would be much improved with more hands analyzed, At least 6/12 would be better. Thank you, GS
Thanks for your feedback. We are trying different formats to deliver the post-game content. Last week, Gavin was playing in a national tournament every day, so he pre-recorded the video for the post-mortem analysis. If everything goes as planned, tomorrow’s post-mortem analysis will be a live zoom session after the game so that you will be able to ask your questions directly.
I loved the postmortem being short and so focused on 4 important lesson points. It really fits well into a busy day. The hands also were a perfect level, not too easy or too hard. Thank you for the fun tourney and post mortem.
I like the video to watch at a time when it is convenient for me. Will we be able to access your live rehash for next week's game at a later time? Will we go to our dashboard?

B12 Does responder have enough to neg dbl? I thought one needed 8 pts or maybe less if I could support opening suit. Or does the 5c suit let you neg dbl with less pts. On this hand should Opener dbl to reopen
I would not make a negative double with the east hand. You really need partner to have short clubs in order for it to be right to bid. Partner will reopen when they have short clubs a lot of the time. Negative double will get you too high, too often. I would not reopen with the west hand because my king of clubs is wasted. If you move it elsewhere I would.

B8 Does responder bid 2H or raise to 3D on this hand? I think raise to 3D courtesy raise
Yes I think I would bid 3♦ with the west hand. There is a tough defense to beat 3♦. Can you see it?
Hi Gavin, On hand 10 I would have liked to hear how to play the 4-3 fit in spades (I misplayed it). Naturally, I will review your lesson on 4-3 fits. Thanks, Larry O
I would probably give up on the idea of throwing my diamond on the 2nd round of hearts. I would win the ace of diamonds (assuming you got a normal ♦Q lead) in order to draw trumps by running the S!J. When that wins I would lead the ♠T which likely gets covered. Now before finishing drawing trumps I would take one of my many finesses I need to take. (clubs and hearts through the overcaller). I would expect to lose 4 tricks on this hand, 1 heart, 1 diamond and 2 clubs. If the defense pops up with the ace of clubs they make our lives a little easier.
Great video! I definitely got something from it. Of course, for us, the more boards the better! Here's a question about board 5 where my LHO opened 1NT. I was NV and held AQJT64 xxx xxx x. Previously I would have bid 2S with this hand. We just took your Woolsey lesson though so I guess I need closer to an opening hand in direct seat in order to bid 2S. Board 3 not wise opening 3d red vs white in 2nd IMHO
Board 5 is a good test of my rules. I actually would overcall 2♠ with that hand because of the texture of the suit. the ten of spades makes a huge difference to me. I am non vul and I would rather declare 2♠ than defend 1NT. I realize that contradicts what I taught in the lesson, but this is right around the line. NV matchpoints you can get away with overcalling a hand with this good of a suit. Board 3 I would not open 3D vul against not. I am ok with 3D if I was in 1st seat non vulnerable or 3rd seat non vulnerable. Vulnerable I would basically have a 7 card suit or a 6-4 with a suit more like board 5.

deal 10 playing support doubles do you still recommend E bids it with 4333 and 4 hearts? With most p's i play support doubles are NOT mandatory
I thought generally support doubles are usually played as always mandatory. Gavin, what do you recommend?
Yes I play support doubles to be mandatory by un passed hands. The only exception is if they overcall a strong NT. I still play support doubles but they are not mandatory. I am allowed to just pass and defend. So yes I would definitely make a support double on the east hand.

No question you should be concerned with coming in vulnerable with spotless hands balanced hands. Balanced hands don't do well when youre vulnerable. This hand has more substance than a random 15-16 point hand, but your point is valid.
Deal 7 is pass by E bad on the first round?
I passed as E here too. I didn't really consider 2D, which is what you suggested Gavin.
I definitely think its worth overcalling the east hand. I don't know how many people bid with it, but I would guess more than 80% of people did. In this spot with so many high card points even if you're wrong to overcall 2♦ you will have field protection. I am not sure what I said in the video but I would also have considered a 1NT overcall. Is pass by east bad? No it could easily work. I just think it's more volatile. 2♦ will work any time partner has a diamond fit or any time either opponent bids again over 2♦.
