On board 5 and in general after transfer followed by 4NT quantitative, is it common to play that, with a fit, partner can respond as if the 4NT were key card ? Are there any other uses of 5 level bids here ? I think I recall Gavin saying in one lesson that you can’t revert to 5S to reject the slam try but show a fit and have to pass 4NT in that case but not sure what 5 level bids mean here. Clearly you can accept the slam try with a for just with 6S as here.
Some people play you show your keycards if you are accepting. What I usually play is all bids on the 5 or 6 level are basically natural, offering contracts. For example 1NT - 2♥ 2♠ - 4NT 6 of a suit other than spades is accepting and showing a good five-card suit. 5 of a suit other than spades I would play is natural, not sure if I should accept or not, help me judge based on how well you fit my suit.
Thanks Josh. Can you help me better understand why "holding my breath" and bidding 3NT is the right way to go as opposed to choosing a 7-card fit?
You really don't know for sure which one will be right, so I would just not choose a 7 card major suit fit when I don't have enough information to know it's right. 3NT seems more with the field. And anyway partner probably rates to be short in our long minor and longer in our shorter minor.
As N, after Smolen I felt I could not bid 3NT with my clubs. Partner certainly could have 2 little clubs. Can you talk about why 3NT is the correct bid?
You don't have a major suit fit, so the best chance is just to presume partner may have some help in clubs, or the opponents can't run more than four.
