I had something yesterday come up like the situation on Board 2. Colors are Red/White. Bidding goes: 1♣ (x) ? ♠ JT875 ♥ J62 ♦ T984 ♣ 7 Are you a bidder with this 2 count? I passed because of the bad vulnerbility. Ends up we would find an 8-card spade fit and win the contract making 3♠. Partners hand: ♠ K96 ♥ A93 ♦ 2 ♣ AKQT65

I would pass for sure. Non vul you can do whatever you want, but you need to respect being vulnerable.

Board 1 Bidding P-1♦-1♠-P Question. What would you bid holding the North Hand?

Gavin WolpertTeacherMay 16, 2023

I would probably bid 1NT but its close between 1NT and pass.

Sheila FrancisMay 3, 2023

On board 4 why do you not raise spades with 3 card support instead of 1nt with heart suit wide open. Is the principle not the same as board 3

Gavin WolpertTeacherMay 3, 2023

Yes it's the same principle. I just missed it when I was doing the overview. Good catch.

Thanks Gavin. Board 5. North competed to 5♥ after (2♥)-2♠-(4♥)-4♠ and it was passed to West (me). I wasn't confident that 4♠ was making, so I might not need to protect anything. Was it still right to double? Board 8, (a) what should West do over 1♣-(2♥)-p-(p)? I looked at the colors and decided to stick my neck out. (b) Same board, should East double them if the auction had gone 1♣-(2♥)-p-(3♥)-p-(p)?

Gavin WolpertTeacherMay 3, 2023

on 5, I dont think you need to double. If partner bid 4S to make they will double. Its a really bad idea to preempt and bid again. Hopefully the near zero the person got will be a learning experience for them. On board 8, I would balance 3♣. It looks like partner is trap passing so im half expecting it to go pass 3NT. Double of 3♥ would be very reasonable in that auction too.

Jon RansomMay 2, 2023

Thanks for the great lesson. On 6, at our table the bidding went: P 1D X 1S. P 2C P 2NT P 3NT P P P What would you lead, as E?

Gavin WolpertTeacherMay 2, 2023

I would lead the unbid suit (hearts). The 8 of hearts would be the normal card to lead when you are leading from that suit holding (2nd from a bad holding)

Deniz KonuralpMay 2, 2023

thanks Gavin very enjoyable as always. On Board 8, sitting W, I felt the need to show/bid my diamonds over opps 2H, clearly the better bid is to show the 6 card club holding by bidding 3Cl (?). I get this kind of bid wrong a lot, thinking that with a 6:4 shape, one should try to show the second suit. Could you explain why I'm wrong to do this? Is it because it's better for partner to know I have the 6 in the one suit rather than trying to convey every last bit of shape I have?.. also I was thinking that somehow I was showing that I had diamonds stopped (since partner had hearts stopped, they might want to bid 3NT yada yada). p.s. also very much enjoyed the YouTube commentary yesterday. I find the YouTube content really helps with hand evaluation chiefly, but also with play. Thanks again, Deniz

3♦ is a reverse and will send the hand to a much higher level. 3♣ just shows a competitive hand. By bidding 3♦ you are turning the hand into a game hand, when it is just a split deck hand.

Hand 5 please: after 2 h: 2s if S responds 3Nt, should west compete to 4s?

Gavin WolpertTeacherMay 2, 2023

Thats a very uncomfortable spot. They arent usually going to be bidding 3NT as a preempt (they are bidding to make) so you have a good sense that partner is a minimum 2S overcall. With that said, I would expect them to be making 3NT if they bid it. Its usually right to show an unmentioned 9 card fit in these types of hands.

hand 8: north hand would you ever preempt 2H over the 1C opening?

Gavin WolpertTeacherMay 2, 2023

Its fine. It is not my style to preempt with 11 counts when partner is an unpassed hand. If partner had passed I would probably bid 2H.

douglas edwardsMay 2, 2023

hand 3: would you consider a DBL from the west hand? if not why not - what would be required in that seat to DBL? over the 2H opener bid?

Gavin WolpertTeacherMay 2, 2023

I would definitely consider it but its very dangerous to do it in the direct seat. Its dangerous for two reasons. 1) its easy to penalize, when north redoubles. 2)when the opponents dont have a penalty, you are telling them you have short hearts making it easier for them to play the hand. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmmRrfTnO9I
