Bd 4 regarding weak jump shifts in competition. If your long suit was ♣s and less than 10 -pts would it be a mixed raise or a weak jump shift?

Gavin WolpertTeacherApr 26, 2023edited

I don't play jump to 3m-1 is mixed. I only do it for majors. So definitely weak. 1H (1S) 3D = mixed raise takes priority over weak.

Hi Gavin, on Bd 2, could E open 1D and rebid 2NT rather than 2C and then 2NT? Not sure if that would be a legal bid but it seems so since you suggest a 2NT bid on the third bid. Is there a compelling reason not to jump to 2NT with the E hand instead of bidding 2C first?

Gavin WolpertTeacherApr 26, 2023

I don't think that hand is worth 18-19, which is what opening 1m and rebidding 2NT shows. It would be perfectly legal, but an overbid. If I were to treat this hand as balanced, I prefer opening 1NT. By bidding 2♣ on our second turn and then bidding 2NT on our 3rd turn we are showing more like 16-18 but a 5-4 hand. Its a different description.

gavin, hi ! 1] #7 > after 1s (3d prempt ) are negative doubles on ? 2} #8 > after (p) p (1d) p (1h) 1s (p) what would 2d and 2h cuebids show ?

Gavin WolpertTeacherApr 24, 2023

1) Yes that would be a fine alternative to bidding 4♠, but in general I like to show my fits. If we double and then correct to 4♠ partner will not know we have a 3 card fit. If the opponents further the preempt to 5D, we will never have shown our spade fit. It is not my style to hide my fit in competitive auctions. 2) 2D = 3 card support, 2H = 4 card support

Hi Gavin: I have been studying the series re: 2/1 and found this to be an interesting auction showing, I think, an attempt to implement your teachings. The auction went wrong and I think I know of where. Could you confirm my understanding, or show me where I am wrong please. https://tinyurl.com/22jhsyd2 1♠; 2♣ (GF, could be short); 3♣'s(showing 3 or more♣'s- can not bid ♥'s as that would show 4 or more); 3♠'s (sets the trump suit); 4♣'s (control; serious 3NT not applicable here); 4NT (wrong bid; should be 4♥'s, denying ♦ control) - am I accurate? With a hand like responder has, avoiding Blackwood is a good idea and the point of control showing at the lower levels? Thanks for your help.

Gavin WolpertTeacherApr 19, 2023edited

The auction went wrong at the 2♣ bid. We never use 2/1 with 4+ card support. 1♠-2♣-3♣= correct bid, 3♠= sets spades, 4♣ = non serious control bid (accurate with this hand). Then north, hearing that partner has no serious slam interest, should not be so excited. I would just sign off with the north hand because you need a solid 16+ perfect points to make a slam. Too much to ask from a non serious 4♣ bidder. The root of this problem was using 2/1 with so many card support. 4+ card support either splinters, or uses Jacoby. No exceptions.

Hi Gavin. https://tinyurl.com/2yrlmvft A recurring problem for me. Is not my 3♠ bid a "free" bid showing a max. pass in this auction? I am constantly fighting the following thought process: "you are a passed hand; yes, P has made a t/o X; opps have furthered the pre-empt (like a good Gavinite should); I bid 3♠ "freely."; give your P a chance to reevaluate his hand. After all, he may not have much in the way of extras and you do not want to "hang" him! He will go to game if appropriate." I know you teach "blast to game." But, I can hear the words of many a player in the past, " what the @#$% are you doing? You are a passed hand! Just bid 3♠'s and let P decide!" Here, if the A♥ is offside, the game does not make. I know it is a good idea to make life as easy as possible for P, but..... So, is my 3♠'s a free bid showing a full max., and do you have any advice for how to combat my line of thinking? Thanks, from "too conservative a player."

Gavin WolpertTeacherApr 19, 2023edited

No 3♠ is not showing a complete max. It is just saying "I would rather declare 3♠ than defend 3♥". I would bid 3♠ basically any time I had 5 spades and I wasn't empty. I would also bid 3♠ with 4 spades and 8 points. Partner has already done the dirty work coming in to the auction, we need to compete to 3♠ aggressively. I would definitely jump to 4♠ with your hand after the 3♥ bid (its more important now than if they pass). This hand is on a finesse through the weak two bidder so its really likely to succeed (6:2) but also they might lead the ace of hearts too.

This structure of the pre-dealt, 8 game tournament with an assessment afterwards is a fantastic way to advance if you are somewhere between a beginner and an intermediate. As a beginner you are -necessarily- taught certain rules for example on B1, I found the explanation on when NOT to further the preempt very useful. In contrast, on Board 4, again the 5 level is something I really struggle with, as it requires a level of experience that you can only gain after seeing many, many similar hands. Here the rule of 'the 5 level belongs to the opps' served us well. On Board 5 the play problem of sorting out the clubs before drawing trumps - something as a beginner you are always too quick to do - was really interesting. So all in all, this is a fantastic way to learn and advance if, like me, you are not a beginner anymore but find it difficult to learn from bridge books. Thank you Gavin and Team Wolpert. p.s. I really appreciated the extra minute and thought 8 - all interesting boards - was a very good number.

B3 If we play two-tier splinters, is the North hand a full-strength splinter or a light splinter? (At the table I went 3NT because I viewed my long and strong trumps as a negative.) B8 What's the difference between 2♦ and 2♥ by South advancing North's 1♠ overcall?

Gavin WolpertTeacherApr 19, 2023

That is a light splinter for sure. You need partner to have more than a minimum game force with all their points outside hearts. 13 working points won't be enough for slam, which is the message that the strong splinter sends.

Board 8 - Gavin said that N should not open under the Rule of Twenty as he had 10 points and 5431 shape which makes nineteen. With 55 he would open. Are there any situations where you may open with a nineteen count under the Rule of Twenty?

Gavin WolpertTeacherApr 18, 2023

Pretty rare in first and second seat for me to open a 19 on the rule of 20 count. AQxxxx Kxxx xx x. I would open 1♠. In 3rd seat I could easily see myself opening for the lead or because I have spades. I would for sure open 1♠ any seat.

BD1: Isn't lebensohl OFF by passed hand East? If so, bids are natural, including 2NT.

Gavin WolpertTeacherApr 18, 2023

Lebensohl is definitely on there. Advancer needs to differentiate between their weak hands and their 8-11 point hands. The only time lebensohl is off is when a passed hand reopens double. Their range is quite narrow.

Mark NightingaleApr 18, 2023↳ replying to Gavin Wolpertedited

ok. So with lebensohl on (2♠=0-8p and 2NT-3♣-3S=8-11p), wouldn't a jump to 3♠ be GF? *Edit: Scratch this question. I think you stated you treat that jump to 3♠ is still only 8-11p, but promises a 5th spade. OK. Gotcha. (Several good sources play that jump as GF & 5spades, but I'm convinced your system is better because it allows useful 4cd/5cd distinction at 8-11p... and 4♠ shows 12+p anyway)*
