Love the 2NT bid on Bd 9 especially since it worked out so beautifully. However, I was thinking that even though bidding H conveys a 6-card suit, with W's nice heart suit maybe a 7-card fit is not such a bad thing. It's lying about the heart length but seems to be more descriptive in terms of the shape. Is this faulty logic?
You are not guaranteed a 7 card fit. Partner could be 5-1-5-2 and will pass 3♥. You cannot make a 3H bid with 5 hearts. 2NT describes our hand nicely. Partner will come back bidding 3♥ when they have enough to accept game. More often than not partner will be short hearts given our shape.

Hi Gavin, Thank you very much for these games and lessons. On board two our bidding was p 1C p 1 H p and then I bid 2N. We played in 3N. Was 2N wrong? On board 5 our opponents bid 4S after 4H. Should I have bid 5H or x. (5 belongs to the opponents!) Thanks Shakti
Board 2: I don't think this hand is strong enough to show 18-19. I would either show 15-17 balanced, or 16-18 with 6+♣ Board 5: What was the auction? How did they find spades?

I cant believe someone would overcall 1♠ with that hand. The only explanation is they thought their partner opened 1♥ and they were responding. The south hand has a normal 2♥ bid. They want to show 3 card support with 6-9 points. Jumping to 3♥ would need 4 card support. It would also show a weak hand since you have a cuebid available to show good hands. North should double 4♠. They are almost surely going down. If they are making you will get a bad score anyways because you have so many high card points.
Hi Gavin. As always, thank you for these lessons. They are incredibly helpful. Boards 6 and 10: The issue re: opening weak 2 bids. The examples here are relatively easy. Board 6 is a clear 1 spade opener as there are several features present in addition to meeting the Rule of 20; a reasonable suit, an outside singleton with no wasted values and a nice 4 card side suit. Board 10 exhibits none of those features but does have a good six card suit, hence a good weak 2 bid. Does the following hand qualify for a pass, weak 2 or a 1 level bid, and why? ♠xx-♥QJ8xxx-♦x-♣AQxx Rule of 20 is out, suit is not good, (2 of top 3, 3 of top 5 not present) but has features with no wasted values in the stiff and a good outside suit. I have been caught with this type of hand repeatedly and have ongoing discussions with fellow Gavinites regarding how to bid the thing. Also, do you have recommendations regarding systems for responder to use other than asking for a feature in openers hand. I use Ogust, but is there anyting better in your opinion? Thanks. Ross
♠xx-♥QJ8xxx-♦x-♣AQxx What I open with this hand would depend on what seat I am in. I am ok to open this hand 1♥, 2♥ or 3♥. I would never pass. It would depend on my partnership style. With warren I would open this hand 2♥ in 2nd seat (because we are sound and he will expect a good hand), 3♥ in 3rd seat (because this hand has lots of playing strength and I would want to put the 4th seat into as tough of a problem as possible). In 1st seat vul I would still open 2♥ because this is a perfectly fine strength for a vul weak 2. First seat non vul I am not sure, I could go 1♥, 2♥ or 3♥ depending on my mood. Ogust is fine. Anything but feature!
