On board 3, is south not worth a mild slam try of 4C rather than just 4H here (assuming playing serious 3NT) ?
Serious 3NT doesn't apply on this auction for 2 reasons. It doesn't apply in competitive auctions, and also 2♠ wasn't forcing to game, but serious 3NT only applies on game forcing auctions. 4♣ is still a reasonable bid by south. It shows an acceptance of an invite, a side club suit, and might help the partnership figure out what to do if the opponents bid 4♠.
Hi Gavin - on board 2, would EW not be better trying to escape from 1NTx ? I think you can find the 4-4 diamond fit and play in 2D - is that not better ?
It's really not clear. If you find a fit then running might be better (or might not). If you don't have a fit, then running is probably worse. With a king and weak suits, I would take my chances in 1NTX.
Can you call the director if you feel the opponents have improperly NOT made a bid? I ended up doubling 4h on board 3 because North passed after 1h-1s.
Hi - I think it is legal to psych a pass (maybe not great to do it in a learning game). I’ve read about this as a tactic somewhere where you have hearts and they have spades and you want to pretend not to have values to tempt them to double you in 4H rather than bidding 4S. No idea if that’s what happened here or N just forgot to bid. Lia’s 4C bid seems a bit odd opposite a partner who passed the first time though.
Hi Samuel, I am glad you asked this question because it's very important to learn early in your bridge journey. Gavin does a great job teaching bridge, and teaches a common expert system. But never forget, there are a million and one ways to play. The world is a big place, and people can play any way they like. As long as the opponents properly disclose their agreements, they can bid what they want, and there is nothing wrong with that even if you wouldn't have made the same bid. If the made a weird bid (or pass) that got you to double a cold contract, then maybe they got lucky, or maybe you can learn something, but either way they have done nothing wrong.
