Board 5: In the Takeout Double Continued Lesson (Slide 45) you seem to be saying that if West passes, they are saying they have no suit preference. So shouldn't West bid 2♦ (preferred) or maybe 1♠. They do end up limping into a ♦ fit.
You'd rather play in 1♠ if partner has 4 spades and 2♦ if partner doesn't. When you pass you get the best of both worlds. PArtner will bid 1♠ when they have 4, and if not we will end up in 2♦.
On BD9, you said "South has 2 ways to bid 3D", cue, or 3D. But you also said 2nd round cues do NOT promise support. Please clarify. P.S. I love the board# -> lesson references below the video! Good for us, good for you ;-)
Responder has limited their hand when they bid 1NT. This a unique situation where the only hand that could cause responder to become strong enough to bid 3♣ is with a diamond fit. What else could 3♣ mean when responder cannot have enough to force to game and opener has not shown any extra values?
On BD1, if Inverted2D is forcing to 3D, then it's impossible to play 2NT. But wont that frequently be the optimal contract? (3NT not makeable, and NT pays more)
Maybe, but I like 2NT forcing anyways. 2NT "frequently being the optimal contract" is an overbid. Making 8 tricks without a trump suit with 23/24 point is a difficult task.
At IMPS, this makes a TON of sense since the point difference (3m vs 2NT) is negligible, and the trump suit creates safety. But would you advocate this same force at MPs, where 3m for 110p would be a bottom when the rest of the field can stop in an often makeable 2NT for 120p?
I just don't think it's a big deal either way. These hands don't come up a lot so there isn't much at stake. I like general rules and having one that says "2NT is always forcing when we have a minor suit fit" helps in a lot of random situations. When I have played it as non forcing I have had the opposite disaster happen too where I would have been able to make 130 on a 120 board and also that 2NT goes down while 3m makes. I don't feel strongly about it all. You can play whatever you want but I play its forcing at matchpoints too.
On board 2, you said S should jump to 3S(no man's land) and it doesn't show a stronger hand than bidding 2S. Is that because they are a passed hand and have already shown <12? If they weren't a passed hand, would it show 12+ points? What do they bid if they aren't a passed hand?
Jumping to 3 in a spot like this is the same no matter whether they are a passed hand or not. (1♣) X (P) 2♠ shows 8-11 With 12+ you would be forcing to game, either by bidding 4♠, or by cue bidding. It is still a 3♠ bid as an unpassed hand.
Great review as always! Thanks! B7 good to know about simple overcall or preempt overcall. On B8, we should not automatically GF with all 12 HCP. In our table it went: 1♠-P 2♣ (4♣) 4♥ P P P Double dummy says e/w can make game in spades. How does East choose between 5-2 or 4-3 trump?
That 4♣ bid really got in your face. I've never seen that happen before, especially in the face of a 2♣ bid in 2/1. I would think partner was 5-5 if they bid 4♥ here, so I would pass 4♥. With that said, I don't know what partner is actually supposed to do over 4♣. This is just a really difficult spot that I wouldn't spend a ton of time worrying about. How often is this actually going to happen that east bids 2♣ and south has a club preempt?
B1 Can you bid 2C 2/1 since you want to go to 3N anyway.
No, 2♣ promises 5 clubs over 1♦.
