in your responding to 1M class, 1S-3H is GI with good six 6c suit. What disqualifies this hand from that bid? What changes would make 3H a viable bid?
This hand is just a little too weak. It's not quite invitational. South would want about another queen to respond 3♥.
Hand 1 I agree with the auction you suggest provided the opponents remain quiet. However after I opened one spade partner responded 1N and west overcalled 2c. At this point I thought it would be best to show my 6 card spade suit before the opponents interfere further. Should the auction have proceed the same as you suggest even after a 2 club overcall by west? My fear was that if I bid 2d the opponents might bid on and we lose the spade suit partner thinking I was 5 2 4 2 The opponents might raise 2 clubs to 4 (didn't happen) but that is what was going through my thought process.
It's a logical thought process, but these diamonds seem too strong to ignore. After all, the opposite can happen too. You can rebid 2♠ and if the next player bids 4♣ a huge diamond fit might be missed. If opener rebids 2♦ then the rest of the auction can continue as given in the lesson.
