1) Yes as I said in the video I would bid 4♦ with this hand. You don't have time to explore a spade fit and show a good hand for hearts. 2) No 4♣ would be natural. 4♦ is the only way to show a good hand with a fit. I went over your options when you have a fit. There are just 3 of them. 3♥, 4♥ or 4♦. 3) As I said in the video 4♦ just shows a good hand with a fit, it doesn't say anything about diamond shortness or trump length. I recommend re-watching that section. There are markers in the video to skip to that particular section.
Board 2: Suppose South takes a more conservative view of their 16 points and responds to the range ask as if it's a minimum. So the auction starts P-1NT-P-2♠-P-2NT-P. I think you said North would still bid 3♠, right? With the same understanding about 6+ clubs and a singleton or void in spades? It's a game forcing bid, right? Alertable, right? But it doesn't necessarily show slam interest?
Yes north would still bid 3♠ to show spade shortness with long clubs over a 2NT response (minimum) to 2♠. It's definitely alertable that 3♠ shows shortness. Any bid that is not natural is alertable. The primary purpose of the shortness bid is to avoid a bad 3NT. It is game forcing. You don't need any slam interest. Once you find out partner does not have points wasted in spades (they do something other than bid 3NT), you can initiate a slam auction on your next turn. Often these hands start with just game interest but develop into slam auctions due to the fact that partner has nothing wasted in spades. If you are interested in the range ask and the whole expert standard 1NT response system (it's not too complicated) then I highly recommend my Master Series Class. BD2. which of those bids need to be alerted and how would one explain it to the table?
2♠ would be alerted as "The slowdown bid, usually 6-7 points" Thats it. You alert artificial calls and calls that have special meanings the opponents aren't expecting. Everything else in that auction is natural.

The reason people play the range ask is to avoid needing to bid stayman without a 4 card major. ♠J42 ♥K7 ♦AT842 ♣ 532 This is an old fashioned 1NT-2NT When I was taught 4 way transfers , using 2NT for diamonds, this hand was forced to bid 2♣ stayman even though we don't care about partner's majors. When playing range ask 1NT-2♠ is one of two hand types 1) 8-9 balanced , inviting 3NT 2) A normal club transfer Over 2♠, opener bids 2NT to say "minimum" or 3♣ to say "maximum". 10) what do you think of south cuebidding 2D instead of bidding 2S?
It's very reasonable. If there was no negative double, I think it's worth a cuebid. The issue I have with cuebid after the negative double is that it seems like a split deck hand rather than a game hand, so I don't love telling the opponents I have 9-10 points if they end up declaring. If I was playing against someone who was prone to open very light in 3rd seat then I would be more inclined to cuebid to let partner know I have something. Its perfectly fine to cuebid and if you considered it (or did it) then you are definitely evaluating your hands very well.
Board #9 - 1:03:07 - You mention you will not Open 10 pt Hands? So 10HCP with two 5 Card Suits, with all points in the two Long Suits - Do Not Open? Even with 6/5 Distribution and 10HCP? Thanks!
I said I will not open random 10 point hands (5-4 hands and 5-3-3-2 hands that dont have a reason to open). Even in this set, I specifically said I would open a 10 count on board 5 with Axxxxx x Jx KQTx.
Board #7 - @58 min 28 sec - If the bidding goes (as you last describe it) 1H - P - 2C - P 2NT - P - 3H If Opener Jumps to 4NT - would it be Blackwood Key Card - or Quantitative? If Quantitative, what is the question Opener is asking? ie are you at the top of your point range? US (5 of your students - Intermediate) are playing a Jump to 4NT is Blackwood Key Card for the last suit bid???? Thanks for all your Help!
Just a timing note to help Gavin find it, this occurs at 55:28 not 58:28.
Hearts are trump, 4NT is keycard. Quantitative is a tool for when we don't have a major suit fit. A Jump to 4NT is only quantitative when you don't have an established major suit fit.
